Josephine Baker (June 3, 1906 - April 12, 1975): She was not only an extremely talented singer, dancer, and actress; she also served as a spy for France in WWII. Unable to have children of her own, she adopted 12 children from around the world and lived with them in a castle in France. She was married to men four times and also had several notable female lovers, including French writer Colette as well as Frida Kahlo.
She also used her influence to support the Civil Rights Movement, refusing to perform for segregated audiences and speaking at the 1963 March on Washington with MLK Jr.

Our culture expects women’s – and men’s – bodies to be a certain way. People are very invested in the idea that Men Look Like This and Women Look Like That and Never the Twain Shall Meet. Well, guess what? Nature doesn’t give a fuck about your sexual binary. Nature puts us together in a million different ways – actually, about seven billion, give or take a few hundred thousand – and a lot of us are going to walk that imaginary line. There are going to be short, hairless men with high voices and tall women with deep voices and people who are intersexed in a bunch of different ways, and here’s the great thing – it’s all okay. Every single one of us. There’s not a thing wrong with any of us.

Rightly listed by Rolling Stone Magazine as one of the best Brazilian albums in history, and possibly of all time  (forgive me if my bias is showing), África Brasil is quite possibly the definitive album of Afro-Brasilian music legend Jorge Ben’s career.
A heavy mixture of samba and funk, Jorge Ben so perfectly captures the iconic sound and essence associated with the Música Popular Brasileira post-Bossa Nova cultural movement in Brasil, and also pays tribute to the various African cultures (e.g. Mozambican, Congolese and Angolan) that have greatly influenced the fabric of Brasilian culture to this day.
Songs such as Ponta de Lança Africano (Umbabarauma), Cavaleiro do Cavalo Imaculado, África Brasil (Zumbi) and Xica da Silva all reference and/or pay tribute to Afro-Brasilian historical icons and Afro-Brasilian history.
